PROJECT OVERVIEW

My digital media and design firm, Rice and Gravy Studios, worked with a West Coast-based hair stylist who specializes in natural hair care. She contracted us to define her brand identity and create digital assets such as her monthly newsletter and product labels. Her goal was to have branding for her online presence, website, and hair care line.

objective

Create logo and a brand identity that could be leveraged for social media and website branding, newsletter distribution, and product labels.

BRAND IDENTITY

benchmarking

Client was inspired by brands such as Legendary Rootz and Elisa Johnson

BRAND WORDS:
Freeing, Rustic (unpolished), Tranquil, Fun, Intentional, Healing, Lifting, Therapeutic, Relatable

Because this client wanted us to partner with her to develop the brand’s all-around identity that would bleed into product, advertising, customer retention, and beyond, it was vital that we had a deep understanding of who she was targeting and why...

TARGET AUDIENCE

Black and Brown Women, ages 25-45 moving towards their goals

Things She Cares About:
  • Being stress-free
  • Unwinding
  • Self-Care
  • Each other
  • The bond between women
  • Freedom
  • Not being shackled in boxes by other’s perceptions
How She May be Described:
  • Wild Child
  • Black Sheep
  • Cool Authentic Vibe
  • Non-Traditional or
    Non-Conventional
  • Intentional

In the daytime, they wear occupational titles, but outside of that, they are just brown women who have been through things. “It's not about what they do, but about who they are before they get to what they do”.

design process

  • The client provided fonts for logo inspiration
  • Pinterest was used to collect images, fonts, and graphics for a mood board
  • Several fonts were analyzed and custom icons were created
  • Once the mood boards were shared with the client and feedback was received, a final logo and color pallet was chosen and presented to the client
COLOR PALETTE

Based on our initial conversation 2 color palette directions were chosen.

Primary Color Palette

1. Darker Palette included the muted dark colors with a few splashes of color. This palette was heavily influenced by popular designs from the 70’s

Secondary Color Palette

2. Brighter Palette was a fun alternative. It spoke to the 1970s but also flowed well with the planned 90s merch and designs. This was a bonus palette for product designs, not for the primary brand identity.

logo

It was the desire of the client for the logo mark to be primary text based, therefore font selection was key. Several fonts were considered based on the inspiration. Each font was slightly tweaked or manipulated to add to add to the customization.

icons
  • A few symbols were incorporated that could be used as icons or as added flare to the logos.
  • Finally a pattern was created pattern using two of the symbols.
Stars - Popular in 70's designs

As the name suggest, I thought it would be appropriate to include some alchemy symbology in the proposed logos.

COLLATERAL + PRODUCT
Since the creation of the brand identity, Rice and Gravy Studio has:
  • designed custom labels for 4 separate products
  • produced and distributed monthly newsletters for the client

The client’s monthly email newsletter was reimagined to include brand colors, language, and identity.

Brown Alchemy hopes to become a lifestyle brand centered around helping black and brown women become centered, connected, and feel good.

Brand aspirations

What’s my experience every day and what do I do to keep calm, cool, and collected and to keep moving forward in my journey?

It’s the things I use: Hair Products, Incense, Yoga Mat, Soaps, Journal, Affirmation Card, etc.

I want to take things we typically use to unwind and put that into a lifestyle brand. Curated explicitly for us in our journey to health, wellness, and self-care.
